Why work with a coach?
There’s a reason most elite athletes work with coaches. Left to their own devices, many of these highly motivated humans would never uncover what they are truly capable of. For some, chasing worthiness and outcomes with a “more is always better” mindset would result in overtraining and decreased performance potential. For others, habitual thought patterns might negatively impact the confidence and belief they need to excel. And in many cases, the lack of a clear and unbiased training plan would see them go off course.
You, sporty soul, are no different than the elites in many ways. Sure, genetics and making a full-time commitment to professional athlete life may separate you, but you’re also a motivated human who commits to things with your whole heart. You want results you’re proud of—in sport and life—while experiencing happiness, fulfillment, and balance.
That’s where coaching comes in. It’s not just for the pros.
Coaching is a guided process that sees you as already capable, already whole, and empowers you to make choices aligned with what matters most to you. The role of a coach is to provide a safe space for you to get clear on your goals and dreams, identify patterns and blind spots that may be holding you back, and co-create with you an actionable plan to move you toward your goals in a way that feels right for you. They’ll also be an unbiased voice keeping you accountable to the actions you’ve committed to.
A positive coaching relationship offers you so much, including:
space to explore and grow, without outside bias or agenda
a vision of what’s truly possible for you
the opportunity to identify and overcome blind spots and unhelpful patterns that keep you feeling stuck
helpful practices and habits that add up to powerful results in your life
encouragement and accountability
a clear plan—with guideposts along the way—to get the results you want
When you invest in coaching, you’re choosing to move forward with the support you need to get the results you want. These may be in your sport, work, health, relationships, or life overall. Select your coach carefully, being sure they specialize in the area you’re targeting and are a good fit for you (learn more about what to look for in a coach here).
I’m a coach, and I receive coaching. Hiring my coach is one of the best investments I’ve made in myself. She helps me stay on track when I veer off course—while at the same time allowing me the space I need to explore branches in the trail, reminds me of my inherent enoughness when self-doubt gremlins come to call, and inspires me to look beyond my perspectives to see what else is possible.
Curious about coaching? It may be the best investment you could make in yourself and your future.
